Pros and cons of living in NYC

Moving Tips NYC - April 13, 2021

If you are planning to relocate to “The Big Apple”, you may want to know what you’re in for. There are numerous advantages and benefits that living in this city offers, but there are some significant drawbacks as well. The most important one is that the cost of living there is absolutely astronomical, compared to most of the rest of the world. You may need to consider plastic bin rental for your relocation, as opposed to purchasing your own containers, in an effort to save as much money as possible, for example. But there are great things too, such as the amazing variety of activities that the city offers. In this article, we will be presenting all the pros and cons of living in NYC, so you can have a better idea of what life here is really like.

Everything you need to know about the pros and cons of living in NYC

To start things off, you need to understand that not every pro, or every con is exactly the same for everyone. Someone will not mind the cost of living at all, for example. It may come as a pro instead, as living in a wealthy, expensive, neighborhood has its own unique set of benefits. Therefore, you need to temper everything you read with your own situation and preferences. Much the same as relocations, where using plastic wardrobe boxes for moving depends on the number of clothing items in your possession, living in NYC depends on a variety of factors. But let’s start with the advantages first.

Getting around in NYC is a lot easier than you might think.

Pros of living in NYC

Living in NYC, you will be able to observe the following benefits:

  • You won’t need a car
  • You will always have something to do
  • One of the pros of living in NYC – Heaven for shoppers!
  • Amazing food!

And, of course, you will be living in one of the most famous cities in the entire world, which is proof of its own. Much of the world-shattering events originate from NYC, for better or worse. You will also have an amazing selection of storage bins at your disposal. Hey, it’s a pro, right? Of course, it is.

You won’t need a car

NYC has an amazing public transit system. All of its boroughs are tightly connected and you will always have options. By using the subway, for example, you can navigate the city much faster than using your own vehicle. True, if you need to carry moving supplies around it may not be the most convenient option but for the most part, it is great. The variety of travel options is simply staggering, and you will be spoiled for choice.

Heaven for shoppers

Remember when we mentioned that this is one of the most famous cities in the world? Well, that means that you can buy almost anything that is made in any corner of the world (and is worth shipping to NYC) here. If you were to simply visit each store for one minute, it would take you something like a year to visit them all. The city is absolutely huge and brimming with chain stores, outlets, malls, and all sorts of small businesses. It is truly shopping heaven.

Amazing food

And when it comes to food, NYC certainly does not disappoint. You can find places that will allow you to try cuisine from any culture on the planet. Except, maybe, just maybe, a few of the tribes that still shoot arrows at visitors. But you can be certain they will soon open a restaurant in The Big Apple, it is only a matter of time. Jokes aside, you can get almost anything to eat in NYC, from all the corners of the world.

Cons of living in NYC

But there are some pretty big drawbacks to living in The Big Apple, as well. Some of them include:

  • Bad weather
  • One of the most expensive cities in the world
  • One of the cons of living in NYC – Traffic

There might be more, depending on the borough of your choice, but these three are the most prevalent ones. Let’s explain why.

Get ready for the bad weather

This is perhaps the biggest downside of the city. The weather is absolutely horrible, compared to some other states. The winters can be long and brutal, the spring is fleeting, and the weather on most days resembles a moody teenager. It can be all sunshine and rainbows in the morning, only to get windy and frigid in the afternoon. There are no rules, except be prepared for anything. But the winter and the fall are the worst seasons to visit NYC, try to avoid them if possible.

NYC is one of the most expensive cities in the world

Moving on, your money will suddenly be “less valuable”. In fact, you may get into an argument thinking that the store owners are “out to get you”. But, more importantly, the renting costs are simply outrageous. You are expected to pay around $5,000 for a 3-bedroom apartment in Manhattan! Sure, there are cheaper boroughs but yikes!

One of the cons of living in NYC – Traffic

And we simply can’t forget the traffic. This is, perhaps, the most infuriating thing about the city if you are used to going everywhere in your own vehicle. It is overly noisy, and the rush hour is almost impossible to deal with. Even the subway gets clogged from time to time at rush hour, which makes general travel really hard at times. But it is how it is and by living long enough in NYC, you get used to it. This is not to say that it is not a horrible abomination of a traffic system, but still. As far as the pros and cons of living in NYC go, the traffic is going to take the longest time to wrap your head around. But, if you are used to noise and don’t mind waiting, it is not too bad, really.
